Looking for a favor [Dec. 29th, 2009|04:16 pm]
Colin Fredericks
I'm looking for someone who can look over my Research Statement; preferably someone who's written one before or served on a hiring committee. I'm applying for a math postdoc position down at UConn, with the intent of joining the Center for Research in Mathematics Education (and also solving the two-body problem).

Yes, Werepirates. Oddly enough, they cuss like sailors. Who would have guessed?

Ray, wherever you are, this is for you.

Also, for those interested in my play-by-post games, they'll be starting sometime next week. Please be sure to let me know if you want in; I suspect there are some folks I missed.

Evolution of a Daffy Duck

An excerpt: "...it was clear that Daffy was coping (unsuccessfully) with a multitude of mental and societal issues that went beyond mere spunk."

Vote! [Aug. 11th, 2009|04:50 pm]

In case you missed it, the previous post.

One game shall be Sufficiently Advanced.

One game shall be whichever of these is chosen by vote:
  1. Nobilis
  2. Everway (Planescape setting)
  3. Amber
  4. Dude, I don't care, just run a game, ok?

Enter your vote as a comment on this post.

I'll be setting up a wiki for the games at Wikidot, probably one site for both games. You'll have to get an account there, which is trivial.

I miss gaming [Aug. 2nd, 2009|10:37 pm]
Colin Fredericks
I miss gaming a lot. I miss the escape into fantasy worlds, the impossible schemes, the feeling of being part of a story. I miss GMing a little more than playing. (Perhaps I'm not-very-secretly a control freak.)

The school I work at makes it almost impossible to have a regularly scheduled game, because the schedule around here is both intensive and irregular. For instance, last Sunday was the only day I officially had off from early June to mid-late August. I have time to myself, but it's not in nice long blocks, and I often don't know ahead of time when something will happen.

And I have all these freakin' game books! Geez, it's like I've been collecting them since 1990 or something. If I put them all together they'd fill the bottom half of the 4x4 cubbyholes (bless you, Ikea).

Anyone up for play-by-post?Collapse )

Kitten + Soy Milk [Jul. 28th, 2009|11:24 pm]
Colin Fredericks
So I bought some soy milk this week because I was feeling nostalgic or something. Tonight I had some with my late-night cereal snack. Isengard (the new kitty) was begging continuously, as usual. I had to throw him across the room more than once to get him to stop. When I finally finished and put the bowl down he raced over. It went like this:

"MILKMILKMILKMILK! Hooray! Milk for me!
Wait. What?
WTF? No, no, no. Try again.
Milk! Right?
Blech. Try again.
Ahem. Milk!
(sniff sniff)
Never mind."

Now it's back to kitty flip-out time again.

Note that the sneeze was partially because he hasn't learned how to sniff liquids without shoving his nose into them.

I think I like them less now. [Jul. 14th, 2009|11:08 pm]

Moderately disturbing. And that's coming from someone who still plays Magic from time to time.

If you "level up" at being retro, is that a level down? [Jul. 6th, 2009|09:51 pm]
Colin Fredericks
This weekend Emma and I were coming back from a wonderful camping trip in VT and stopped by my parents' place, partially to say hi and partially so I could look for some stuff in my old room. Specifically, I was hoping to find my original Chrono Trigger cartridge for a friend who has a working SNES. No luck. :(

However, I did find an original Game Boy, in working condition, with 14 games. Games including Tetris, Super Mario Land 1 and 2, TMNT, Final Fantasy Adventure, Castlevania (GB version) 1 and 2, and Metroid 2. And a bunch of my brother's sports games. I also found the rechargeable battery pack, which (if it works) will mean we don't have to buy tons of AA batteries.

The New Cuteness [Jun. 30th, 2009|12:46 pm]
Colin Fredericks
Here is our new kitten, with my hand for scale. Sorry for the grainy image. Silly camera phone.

He actually looks bigger than he is in that picture. He doesn't have a name yet. We're probably going to stick with the Tolkien theme we had from Mirkwood. Isengard, Fangorn, Thorin, and Sauron are all possibilities. Maybe not Sauron.

We got him yesterday from Animal Control down in Dayville. It was very hard to come home with just one animal - they had so many that needed homes, including many well-behaved adult cats. This little guy is skin and bones right now. He was really angry on the way home from the shelter, but he's pretty happy now that he has so much room to run around in.

Mirkwood isn't 100% on the little guy just yet, but he'll come around. New kitty is still figuring out how to do things like drink water out of a bowl without shoving his nose into it (and thus sneezing) and how to not run into large white objects like the tub and the washing machine.
